Hitchcock introduces Daniels Brenner's mother Lydia as well as Suzanne Pleshette as his former partner Annie, long before the action occurs. The suspense is increased by Hitchcock taking time to establish the relationships between these two characters. There are memorable minor roles played by Jessica Tandy as Brenner's mother, Lydia, and by Suzanne Pleshette as his former lover, Annie. Evan Hunter (better known as Ed McBain) adapted the screenplay from an Daphne Du Maurier novella. Hitchcock's use of electronic sounds instead of a musical score worked very well. Hitchcock used research to prepare for his film about an eerie real-life assault of Shearwaters with a haze of smoke located in Capitola (California) in 1961. The theory was that poisoning with diatoms caused the acute aggression of birds when they consumed anchovies.
